About the magazine

A quiet record of a slow art.

Nebari takes its name from the spread of roots at the base of a bonsai — the part of the tree that suggests great age, and the part that takes the longest to earn. The magazine is built in the same spirit: four issues a year, no more, each one made to be kept.

Every issue collects long-form writing, original photography, and field reporting on the trees, pots, nurseries, and growers that make up the international bonsai world — from a back-garden first juniper to the old gardens of Omiya.

“Bonsai is not a hobby that rewards hurry. We thought a magazine about it shouldn't either.”
— From the editor's letter, Issue 01
